Cape Cod Duck Hunting

Cape Cod Duck Hunting
Bass River Charters is now offering sea duck hunting from the shores of Cape Cod. Captain Ray Ransom has been hunting since he was a young boy but recently upped the ante and has decided to take hunters out as well. There are thousands of ducks that migrate here in the winter months and hold over until the weather warms.

Some of the ducks you will encounter are Common Eider, Surf Scoter, Bufflehead, Merganser, Old Squaw, Mallards and Black ducks. There are Brant and Canadian Geese as well. We will be hunting over decoys in layout blinds set up on the shore most of the time but occasionally hunting right off the boat. To get to and from the hunting spots we will be traveling in a 21ft. Carolina skiff with a 150 Yamaha engine.

The hunting grounds will vary, depending on where the birds set up. Cape Cod Bay, off the shores of Monomoy Island, Pleasant Bay and even Nantucket sound will be some of the places to hunt. We start the day early. A short 15-20 min. boat ride to a spot where the decoys will be set out before the morning flight to the feeding grounds begin.

As the sun rises the birds begin to fly. Coming into the decoys as singles or as in many cases huge flocks. The action is usually hot with birds coming in all day long. It's not uncommon to get your limit of 4 Eiders in an hour or 2. If you enjoy hunting as much as I do you need to come to Cape Cod and experience one of the most exciting hunts you will ever go on.

Things to Bring:

Guns: You will need a shot gun in a 12 or 10 gauge with a modified choke. The guns must be plugged to hold no more than 3 shells. You will need #1, #2 or BB's with steel shot, no lead. Bring 2 or 3 boxes of shells.

Cloths: You will need to dress accordingly. New England weather can be very unpredictable in the fall and winter. Wet weather clothing and gloves are important. A warm jacket in camo or drab colors and hip boots or waders are recommended along with a hat and maybe a gator to keep you face warm. Don't forget your long johns.

Licenses: You will need a MA. State hunting license with a duck stamp, as well as a federal duck stamp. You can get your Ma. license on line before you come at www.mass.gov/dfwele/dfw/recreation/licensing/vendors/license_vendors_sd.htm. Or just stop down at one of the local tackle shops that sell them. Riverview Bait and tackle or The Goose Hummock would be glad to hook you up.
Don't forget to bring a copy of your old license and your hunters safety certificate with you. It will help to expedite the process.
